Add lack of educational diversity to venture capital’s gender and racial diversity problems

Venture capital’s gender and racial diversity problem is well known—there are simply too many white males controlling who gets funded in Silicon Valley. But a new survey shows VC also has an educational diversity problem.

A review of the demographics of some 1,500 venture capitalists by Richard Kerby, a partner at Equal Ventures, shows 40% went to either Harvard or Stanford.

On top of that, 82% are men and 70% are white. “It is no wonder that this industry feels so insular,” Kerby wrote in a Medium post.

There was some progress though. Kerby did a similar survey in 2016, and a comparison shows the share of women VCs expanded from 11% to 18% in two years.
