E-commerce giant Alibaba is coming after Amazon Web Services

In the last year, Alibaba’s cloud business has nearly doubled to surpass 1 million users.

The Chinese e-commerce company made a $1 billion investment into its cloud computing unit two years ago in an aggressive effort to compete with Amazon Web Services and other cloud businesses.
“Our goal is to overtake Amazon in four years, whether that’s in customers, technology, or worldwide scale,” Alibaba Cloud’s president Simon Hu told Reuters at the time.
2017 has been good to Alibaba—all its divisions are growing and it says it’s up to 466 million active shoppers (pdf) (140 million more people than the entire US population).
After its better-than-expected earnings report on Aug. 17, Alibaba is quickly closing in on Amazon in terms of market value.
It’s clear from the recent earnings report that Alibaba’s investment in its cloud business and efforts to expand its global footprint have paid off.
