McDonald’s arrived in China in 1992. Located in Beijing, two blocks away from Tiananmen Square, it was the largest McDonald’s restaurant in the world.
Back then, McDonald’s planned to open 40 locations in China in three years. Now, it plans to open an average of 30 every month, bringing the total stores in the country to 4,500.
There is potential to open even more: Competing restaurant company Yum China operates 7,600 KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell stores in the country, spread across 1,100 cities.
